Agata Sapiecha

She graduated from the Academy of Music in Warsaw, violin class of prof. Stanisław Kawalla and Maria Słubicka. She completed artistic training at Moscow’s Conservatory where she was a student of Oleh Krysa. She also obtained a diploma from Dresdner Akademie für Alte Musik, specialising in baroque violin, having studied with Simon Standage.

Apart from historical violin, she also plays the viola (e.g. Brandenburg Concerto no. 6 by J.S. Bach, or Sinfonia Concertante in E‑flat Major by W.A. Mozart), she also plays medieval and renaissance instruments which preceded the violin.

She collaborates with Polish and foreign artists and musicologists. Thanks to cooperation with Barbara Przybyszewska-Jarmińska, she has many times performed and recorded most pieces by Kaspar Főrster junior together with the ensemble and outstanding singers; in the repertoire she also included Violin Sonatas by Aldebrand Subissati (concertmaster of the Warsaw Castle ensemble), newly discovered and published by Piotr Wilk (label Musica Iagellonica).

Agata Sapiecha participates in significant festivals in Poland and around the world. Among her achievements are numerous recordings for the radio, television and recording companies (including a CD and a DVD as a soloist, head of Il Tempo, and collaborator of Polish and international ensembles and orchestras).

As a soloist and concertmaster of Il Tempo, Orchestra of the International Summer Academy of Early Music and Inter-University Baroque Orchestra, she has conducted many instrumental and vocal-and-instrumental concerts (e.g. oratorio La Resurrezione by G.F. Händel, symphonies from the Jasna Góra collection, arias from Mozart’s operas, Stabat Mater by Józef Zeidler, La Liberalità di Numa Pompilio by G.A. Ristori, and Weihnachtsoratorium by J. S. Bach), including many premiere performances often transmitted by Programme 2 of the Polish Radio and radio programmes being part of the European Broadcasting Union.

In the period of 1992–2002, she presented original programmes on Programme 2 of the Polish Radio. She sits on the jury of international and national early and chamber music competitions (e.g. in Bruges, Kalisz, Rovereto, Cracow, Bydgoszcz, Leżajsk, Łomianki). She is head of jury and member of the Artistic Council of the Schola Cantorum Festival in Kalisz.

Between 1996 and 2016, she headed the Inter-Department Early Music Course at the FCUM transformed into the Unit of Early Music of the FCUM in January 2014. Apart from teaching at the University, Agata Sapiecha is an author and supervisor of the following annual artistic and academic events: Early Music Forum at the FCUM/FCAM (2003–2017) and academic symposia “From Source to Music Interpretation” (since 2012).

Since 2014, she has collaborated with the Academy of Art in Szczecin and since the academic year 2015/16, she has been its lecturer.

In the period of 2009–2012, she represented the FCUM at the International Early Music Plaform Conferences organised by the AEC. She was the founder (in 1992), head and lecturer of the International Summer Academy of Early Music in Warsaw and the Concert Spirituel Foundation responsible for these events since 2000. Recently, after 17 of heading the Council of the Concert Spirituel Foundation, she became its President in January 2017.

As a teacher, she gives masterclasses, consultations and lectures.

She received three nominations for the ‘Passport’ of the weekly magazine ‘Polityka’ in the category of music. In 2006, she received an Honorary Badge “For Merits to Polish Culture” from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.

She is the author of the chapter entitled “Muzyka dawna” [Early Music] in Raport o muzyce [Report on music] published by the Institute of Music and Dance (2011) and the book Mowa dźwięków w muzyce XVII wieku [The speech of sounds in music of the 17^th century] published by the FCUM (2011).

In June 2013, she received an honorary title and badge “For Merits to Kalisz” from the Municipal Council of the Town of Kalisz. In July 2014, she was honoured with the Award of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage for her artistic and teaching achievements.

In September 2013, she obtained a post-doctoral degree in art in the area of musical arts, artistic discipline of instrumental studies.
