Edward Sielicki

music education

Edward Sielicki, composer and educator, was born in Warsaw. He is the son of the well-known composer Ryszard Sielicki who studied at the Moscow Conservatory and was a student of Dmitri Shostakovich. Edward Sielicki studied with Andrzej Dobrowolski and Włodzimierz Kotoński at the Fryderyk Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw and with Ton de Leeuw at Sweelinck Conservatorium in Amsterdam. He has also attended International Composition Workshops in Amsterdam (1984, 1988), Holiday Courses in Darmstadt (1986) and Avinion (1991) and several music courses and workshops in Poland. He is a laureate of several competitions including the Polish Composers Association’s Youth Competition, the International Composition Competition in Geneva and the International Electroacoustic Competition in Bourges. A number of his works have been recorded on records and he has also made library recordings for the Polish Radio. He has received many scholarships from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.

Edward Sielicki taught at secondary music schools in 1982–2006. He has been lecturing at the Fryderyk Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw, now the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music, since 1987. He received his postdoctoral degree in music arts in December 2007. In 1992–1993 he taught at the Summer University in Marly-le-Roi near Paris and in 2001, 2003 and 2005–2006 he taught a composition class at Keimyung University in Daegu, South Korea. He has also given many open lectures at various colleges at home and abroad. He is a researcher and populariser of music.

Edward Sielicki has composed 70 works including symphonies, vocal-instrumental, choral, chamber, solo, and electroacoustic works. His works have been performed at leading music festivals at home and abroad, e.g., in Belgium, Finland, Russia, Canada, Mexico, France, Holland, USA, South Korea, Germany, and the United Kingdom. Many distinguished performers including the Wilanów Quartet, Royal Quartet, Lutosławski Quartet, chamber choirs — Schola Cantorum Gedanensis and Ars Antiqua, flautists Elżbieta Gajewska and Hanna Turonek, harpist Anna Sikorzak-Olek, saxophonists Alina Mleczko and Cezariusz Gadzina, violinist Patrycja Piekutowska, oboist Mariusz Pędziałek, clarinettist Krzysztof Zbijowski, the Dutch organist Dirk Luijmes, the Ukrainian pianist József Őrmény, have his works in their permanent repertories.

He is deputy dean of the Department of Composition, Conducting and Theory of Music at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw for term 2008–2012.
