Maja Metelska-Rasanen

Maja Metelska is a conductor and cellist, graduate of Master Degree studies in Symphony and Opera Conducting with Prof. Antoni Wit (Diploma 2006) at the Department of Composition, Conducting and Theory of Music, and Master Degree studies in Cello with Prof. Andrzej Zieliński (Diploma 2008) at the Department of Instrumental Studies. She participated in international masterclasses given by (among others) Jorma Panula and Yuri Simonov. She also studied at the American Academy of Conducting in Aspen, USA, with David Zinman, and at the Sibelius Akatemia in Helsinki with Prof. Leif Segerstam. In 2010, she obtained a doctoral degree in musical art, artistic discipline of conducting, followed by a post-doctoral degree in 2014. She currently works as adiunkt (Assistant Professor) at the Chopin University of Music, Chair of Symphony and Opera Conducting.

Maja Metelska has conducted concerts of major Polish orchestras, including the Warsaw National Philharmonic Orchestra, National Radio Symphony Orchestra, Polish Baltic Philharmonic Orchestra, Silesian Philharmonic Orchestra, or Cracow Philharmonic Orchestra. Abroad she has conducted such renowned orchestras as Turku Philharmonic Orchestra, Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra, Orquesta Sinfonica de Navarra Pablo Sarasate, Osaka Philharmonic Orchestra, Nagoya Philharmonic Orchestra, or Tokyo Symphony Orchestra. She has been also working in the field of opera, since 2011 she has been a conductor at the Warsaw Chamber Opera. She has held the function of music manager and conductor in the productions of operas Gianni Schicchi by G. Puccini, Flis by S. Moniuszko, Olimpia z Gdańska by Z. Krauze (premiere performance, Baltic Opera), Orphée by D. Przybylski (premiere performance), and more.

She was a prize winner at many prestigious conducting competitions, e.g. the 9^th G. Fitelberg International Competition for Conductors in Katowice (2^nd Distinction Award and Special Prize for the best performance of a piece by Polish composer funded by the Association of Authors and Composers ZAIKS), 1^st International Solon Michaelides Conducting Competition in Nicosia (Special Award of the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra), 4^th W. Lutosławski International Competition for Young Conductors in Bialystok (3^rd Distinction Award), or the 16^th Tokyo International Music Competition for Conducting (Honourable Mention Award and Special Hideo Saito Award).
