The Department of Symphony and Opera Conducting was created out of the structure of the University in October 2019 and at the same time it became the heir of the achievements of the Department of Composition, Conducting and Theory of Music, which existed earlier.
The Department offers studies for the Major of Symphony and Opera Conducting. Unique teachers, among whom are magnificent Polish conductors, continue great traditions of bandmaster schools created by world-renowned authorities: honorary professors of the UMFC: Emil Młynarski, Stanisław Wisłocki, Bogusław Madey and Antoni Wit, as well as other outstanding employees of the Department: Artur Rodziński, Walerian Bierdiajew, Bohdan Wodiczko, Witold Rowicki, Henryk Czyż, Ryszard Dudek, Marek Pijarowski or Szymon Kawalla.
Aside from teaching activity, the Department’s employees are very active artists and researchers – they issue numerous publications, release original scores and CDs and participate in international conferences, seminars and symposia organised by leading artistic and research centres in Poland and abroad.
The Department closely collaborates with the most important Warsaw orchestras. The teaching offer also includes postgraduate studies in Wind Orchestra Conducting. Unique teachers plus relatively extensive orchestra working capacities result in the fact that our students win awards at many prestigious all-Poland and international conducting competitions, perform with the most famous Polish and foreign orchestras and many of them hold managerial positions in the most important cultural institutions in Poland and abroad.
